Pakistan and the European Union held their ninth dialogue on counter -terrorism in Brussels on Thursday to discuss collaboration on counter -terrorism as part of their broader commitment to security issues within the framework of the strategic engagement plan for 2019.
The respective delegations were led by the European external action service for security and defense policy Maciej Stadejek and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director General of Terrorism Abdul Hameed.
The European Union and Pakistan condemned terrorism in all its forms and confirmed their steadfast obligation to fight it, an official statement reads.
The two -sided lectures enabled an exchange of regional and global challenges, including security consequences of the situation in Afghanistan and in other areas, such as the Middle East.
Both parties confirmed the importance of strong cooperation with international partners in Multilateral Fora. This includes work in the United Nations framework and in the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum, which the EU has co-chair since 2022, it added.
The European Union and Pakistan also discussed areas for the exchange of best practices and for concrete cooperation with a focus on joint actions on the prevention and counteract of violent extremism, recruitment and movement of foreign fighters, offline and online radicalization, combating terrorism financing and more issues that are relevant to tackling the growing challenges facing terrorism.
In January, the EU’s specialist representative for Human Rights (EUSR) visited ambassador Olof Skoog a weekly visit to Pakistan, emphasizing the need for progress with a number of issues in Pakistan, including human rights, to take advantage of GSP+ status in the midst of the ongoing review during GSP+ Trade policy.
During his visit, Ambassador held Skoog meetings with federal and provincial government ministers, military leadership, senior officials, UN bodies, human rights defenders and lawyers, civil society organizations, media representatives and business.
The special representative confirmed the EU’s obligation to support Pakistan in fulfilling his human rights obligations and encouraged in this respect diligent efforts and meaningful consultations with all stakeholders, including the country’s lively civil society.
