Pakistan Eyes 8,000 MW Target with Chashma-5 project

Islamabad:

The subway Chashma-5 nuclear power plant is expected to contribute 1,200 megawatts (MW) clean, safe and cheap electricity for the national network.

Chashma Nuclear Power Complex General Manager Engineer Habibur Rehman made these comments while informing a group of journalists at Chashma Nuclear Complex.

He informed that the project went on quickly and said that Pakistan was working to improve its nuclear power production capacity to 8,000 MW with the aim of making core energy a reliable component of the country’s sustainable and affordable energy mix.

In the apartment, media representatives toured several operational and substructure units at the plant, where they were informed of plant performance, security protocols, technical systems and environmental standards.

Engineer Habibur Rehman noticed that Pakistan is currently ranking among the top 20 nuclear power -producing countries globally, operating six nuclear reactors with a combined generational capacity of 3,530 MW.

The figure is expected to rise to 4,730 MW after the end of Chashma-5, he added.

He explained that the Chashma-5 project was based on the advanced Hualong One (HPR1000) design, a third generation of pressure reactor under pressure.

The plant was developed in collaboration with Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). The first concrete of the project was poured on December 30, 2024.

He highlighted global trends and noted that nuclear power regained international attention.

Several developed nations, including the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and South Korea, which had previously scaled back or planned to phase out nuclear power, now went again with the sector and actively built new nuclear facilities.

General Manager said core energy offered a cost -effective, safe and environmentally friendly source of electricity. In calendar years 2024, nuclear power accounted for approx. 13% of Pakistan’s total electricity supply. In December 2024 alone, its share peaked of about 26.5%.
