The United Nations:
A Top Pakistani Diplomat has called on to resolve the conflict in Yemen through “effective diplomacy and a collective response”, noting that it was trained from the local to the regional and ultimately a crisis of global implications.
In a speech in the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, Ambassador Munir Akram, a permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, warned that resumption of military operations will further exacerbate the conflict.
The crisis in Yemen, which deteriorated in 2014, after Houthi Rebels (officially known as Ansar-Allah) seized the capital, Sanaa, has been marked by complex political and military tensions. More than 17 million people – half of the country’s population – remain dependent on humanitarian aid and protection.
The Pakistani envoy said that the progress made during the December 2023 negotiations must be preserved and consolidated, ensuring the full implementation of obligations to lasting peace.
Supports the ongoing mediatory efforts from the UN’s special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, Ambassador Akram said he shared his view that the timetable remains a viable path to a nationwide ceasefire.
