Pakistan Squad for Champions Trophy 2025 – Fakhar Zaman, Faheem Ashraf back; SAIM AYUB OUT

Fakhar Zaman has been appointed in Pakistan’s team for Champions Trophy and marked his return after he fell out with PCB over a social media post in October 2024. In a team, PCB called “Horses for courses”, Faheem Ashraf, who last played international cricket By 2023 has also been called up. Khushdil Shah and Saud Shakeel are also included. The same team also plays the ODI-TRI series against South Africa and New Zealand in the construction of Champions Trophy.
The team confirms what was widely feared in Pakistan: Saim Ayub remains unavailable due to the ankle break he has inflicted under the Cape Town test. At that time, it was announced that he would be out for six weeks, but it was thought his chances of recovering from time to Champions Trophy was unusually slim. Earlier today, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that Ayub’s return remained “at least four weeks” away.
Abdullah Shafique’s loss of form has cost him somewhere in the troop. In the recently ended Odi series against South Africa, which Pakistan won 3-0, he became the first player to be laid off for a duck in each match in a series. This means that Pakistan will go in with a completely different opening parlor, where Fakhar is likely to mate with either Babar Azam or Saud Shakeel, with PCB quoting Babar’s success opening in the test cricket as a potential factor to consider.

“Fakhar’s opening partner could be either Babar Azam or Saud Shakeel, depending on various factors, such as conditions, opposition and match strategy,” said a statement from Asad Shafiq, a member of the selection panel. “Both players are very skilled at the top of the order, where Babar is especially spiced up in the role, which regularly opens in T20i’s and also stands out in the Cape Town test by scoring two half a century in Saim Ayub’s absence.”

The team also retains its pace-heavy element, which saw Pakistan win three consecutive ODI series at the end of last year. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain are all part of the last 15, with only one specialist spinner in Abrar Ahmed. None of Sufiyan Muqeem, who made four wickets on his debut in the only ODD he was playing, or Shadab Khan, who was captain of his side to the Champions Cup Glory in September, has made the final clip.

“One of the prominent qualities of this site is its flexibility – an important feature of today’s modern cricket,” Asad Shafiq, a member of the selection panel. “We are convinced that this team hits the right balance between youth and experience and has all the bases covered. Each player is chosen with a clear role in mind, ensuring that the captain has versatile options available.”

Irfan Khan, who became the eye of the selection committee as a key component of Pakistan’s middle order and the veteran of his field, also falls out. Faheem’s return comes out of the back of the limited ODI -cricket after having a indifferent Champions Cup in September. However, strong views with bats in the President Cup in October seem to have played a role in serving him what seemed to be an unlikely recall.

Pakistan’s first match at Champions Trophy will be against New Zealand in Karachi on February 19, after which they go to Dubai to play against India. They play their last group game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on February 27.
