Pakistan Super League hopes to expand from six to eight teams after the 2025 season, PSL CEO Salman Naseer said on Thursday.

First staged in 2016 in the United Arab Emirates due to security concerns, PSL is now hosted in Pakistan, aiming to strengthen its commercial appeal and competitiveness.

The planned expansion comes at an important commercial time for PSL, where media and sponsorship rights go on sale.

PSL 2026 will also embrace new cities with Peshawar, which will host his first exhibition game, a step against full PSL matches. The trophy will also embark on its first nationwide tour, which brings the event to cities that are not hosted.

“By the end of this year, we may get two teams,” Naseer told local media on Thursday.

“We started at a time when no cricket happened in Pakistan. The challenge was to bring it back.

“Now that we have successfully brought cricket back to traditional centers, the next step will be expanded beyond these four cities (Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan).”

PSL’s window in January-February is now facing competition from South Africa’s SA20 and UAES International League T20, with its value related to data after the season when the rights go on sale.

“This year will be an interesting test, and with more teams we expect a larger window,” Naseer added.

“Some of our rights are ready for valuation after this PSL. Much depends on the data we collect.”

The 2025 edition will start on April 11. Holders Islamabad United are PSL’s most successful team with three titles.
