Pakistanis are known for their freehand approach to charitable purposes of several organizations operating in the country while financing exclusively by public donations.
However, the true extent of the charity has been revealed through a study, after which as many as 50 million Pakistanis gave RS619 billion – of $ 2.19 billion – in 2024 with regard to Zakat.
Zakat is one of the five central columns in Islam and refers to the amount each Muslim is required to give to the distressed each year, provided he qualifies for it. Zakat is typically calculated at 2.5% of the total amount exceeding the Nisab threshold.

The study conducted via computer -assisted telephone interviews in 2024 as a result of a partnership between the International Center for Tax and Development (ICTD) and Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lums) reveals that the average contributions during this time were around RS15,000.

Interestingly, the study shows that the estimated Zakat amount exceeded what was distributed by Benazir Income Support Program (Bisp), which stood on RS592 billion and also RS5777.4 billion federal duty (bold) collected by the government.
The Zakat amount also exceeded the official development aid received by the country in 2022, corresponding to RS376 billion.
In addition, Pakistanis preferred overwhelming to give their own zakat-in the place to rely on the state-managed mandatory collection system-with more than two-thirds, giving it directly to individuals.
“About one -tenth of Zakat giver gives to mosques and school, with a smaller proportion that give NGOs,” the report adds.
