Karachi:
The Sindh government abolished parking fees on all roads over Karachi’s 25 cities on Friday, according to an official report issued by the local government department.
The order follows Directives from Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and is part of a wider parking policy aimed at securing free parking in public spaces all over the city.
“Providing free parking for citizens is a highest priority,” said Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, adding that the decision was made in the public interest and that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) remains financially stable.
With this step, parking fees will now only be allowed in designated seats, commercial plot and advice -specified areas. “No institution will now be allowed to charge parking fees on public roads,” says the announcement.
The prohibition applies to 46 main roads where the implementation is already underway. The policy also extends to the rest of the city’s roads in a phase way. The local government department has launched a formal campaign to enforce policy.
All municipal companies in the city have been instructed for immediate collection of parking fee. “Strict instructions have been issued to municipal commissioners and non -compliance will result in litigation.”
The department also warned against illegal collection of fees. “Litigation has begun to the parking mafia; illegal fee collectors will not be spared,” the statement added.
Authorities have repeated that any fee collection outside the designated legal zones is now prohibited. “Immediate action will be taken against municipal authorities that do not enforce the new rules,” the government noted.
The new directive follows the previous KMC decision to end parking fees and expand the policy across all 25 city administrations in Karachi.
“This is a citizen-first move,” said Mayor Wahab, adding that the policy was adopted and kept public convenience in mind.
