Parties in Kurram conflicts begin to surrender heavy arms when the peace effort goes on

Parachinar: Heavy weapons were abandoned by the elders in the lower and upper kurram volunteer on Saturday as the efforts to restore lasting peace of the district on continuing, The news reported.

The elders from the lower and upper Kurram handed a significant amount of heavy arms to the authorities in the first phase.

Deputy Commissioner Kurram Ashfaq Ahmed said these measures were taken during the peace agreement signed in Kohat, which also led to the demolition of about a thousand bunkers created by rival groups. The voluntary transfer of weapons would continue across different areas of the district in the coming days.

The Deputy Commissioner added that the government, together with disarmament, was working to embarrass closed roads and take different steps to give relief to the public, affected by many years of turmoil.

In a speech with the media in the apartment, tribal leaders insured Zamin Hussain and Abdul Manan full cooperation with the government to maintain peace. They also called on the authorities to accelerate the efforts to reopen travel paths and offer much needed relief to the local population suffering from the long -term uncertainty.

Kurram, a district of more than 600,000 inhabitants near Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, has long been a hotspot for sectarian violence. But in recent months have seen escalating tensions, with clashes since July to date, leaving over 200 people died.

The recent clashes aggravated a humanitarian crisis in the district, where medicine and oxygen supplies run critically low due to the long -term closure of the most important highway connecting parachute to Peshawar.

Reports suggest that over 100 children may have died of a serious shortage of medicine, though Khyber Pakhtunkhwa spokesman, as lawyer Saif has denied these claims.
