Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation holds salary, pensions for over 17 months
HYDERABAD:
The Mehran Workers Union of Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation has threatened to suspend the city’s water supply and drainage system from 20 Ramadan if pending salaries and pensions are not released.
If this happens, it will be quite an Eid without early morning showers for Eid prayers and overflowing sewers in the streets.
Union Secretary General Mujtaba Aslam Abbasi, along with other officials, said in a statement that employees have been deprived of salaries and pensions for 17 months. With Ramazan underway and Eid approaching, there are only 20 working days left before the festival, yet neither the company’s management nor Hyderabad’s mayor has shown any seriousness in solving the problem.
They recalled that during a recent visit to Hyderabad, Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah had assured union leaders in the presence of the mayor that the matter would be resolved soon. However, no progress has been made so far.
Widows of deceased employees deprived of pension for 17 months continue to visit offices with their orphans hoping for relief but return disappointed each time. Families of workers now face hunger and hardship.
