Petition Seeking IHC -Record of Justice Jahangiri Suspension Hearing

Barrister Jahangir Jadun has applied for the registrar of Islamabad High Court (IHC) to get the Audio-Video recording of Tuesday’s hearing in Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri’s suspension case in Chief Justice’s Court.

The application argues that although the media reported that no order had been adopted, it was later learned after the hearing that Justice Jahangiri had been suspended from legal work.

The application specifically requests the audio video recording of Court 1 from September 16 at 1 p.m. 13, with a USB drive also submitted for the recording.

This movement comes after one Two -member’s bench led by IHC chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Sarfraz Dogar, sitting with Justice Mohammad Azam Khan, on Tuesday issued the order of a petition filed by lawyer Mian Daud against Justice Jahangiri ..

In addition to suspending his judicial functions, the bench appointed two senior lawyers – Barrister Zafarullah Khan and former Attorney General ASHTAR AUSAF – which Amici Curiae to help consider the validity and maintenance of the case.

IHC also issued a message to the lawyer in Pakistan and sought his input on whether the petition challenges Justice Jahangiri’s academic qualifications is presumed.

In the exception of the order, Islamabad announced a strike on Wednesday (today) on both IHC and the court. It said that a general organ meeting would decide the future course of action and that a demonstration would also be held.

Meanwhile, a revised customs list was released by the court, where Justice Jahangiri is not included in any bench assignments, including both hearings with a single and division.

On August 31, 2024, Karachi University’s Syndicate canceled the allegedly “invalid” degree of justice Jahangiri on the recommendations of the University’s unreasonable means (UFM) committee.

The statement issued by the university after the meeting did not mention the name of Justice Jahangiri, but noted that the committee had proposed cancellation of the “degree and registration card from candidates found guilty of unethical and immoral acts.”

The decision came a few hours after the detention of Syndicate member Dr. Riaz Ahmed, who was reportedly picked up by police in an apparent attempt to prevent him from attending the key meeting.

However, on September 5, 2024, Sindh High Court suspended Karachi University’s decision.

A division bench consisting of justice Salahuddin Panhwar and justice Amjad Ali Sahito also prevented the university from taking further action against a complaint against Justice Jahangiri while hearing a petition filed by the judge.

Legal sources say that Justice Jahangiri plans to challenge IHC’s decision before the Supreme Court after receiving the written order.
