Zack Wheeler will miss at least a few of his next scheduled starts after Philadelphia Phillies placed their ESS on the 15-day wounded list on Saturday after learning a blood clot diagnosis.

Dave Dombrowski, Phillies’ president of baseball operations, said the blood clot is located near Wheeler’s shoulder.

No schedule was set for the return of the three-time MLB All-Star.

Atlanta Braves Ace Chris Sale won the NL Cy Young Award in 2024, while Wheeler was runner-up. This season, Wheeler is performing again at a level that is expected to get him some Cy Young voices.

Wheeler has mostly been healthy and available for the past few seasons. He has not been placed on IL since August 2022, when he experienced tendinitis in his right forearm.

While Wheeler’s setback will force Phillies to make adjustments, the team is also preparing to offer Aaron Nola back to his rotation.

Nola, 32, has performed in nine games this season. He has been sidelined for three months with a rib stress fracture and an ankle sprain. Nola broke up in a couple of rehabilitation starters and is planned to return to Haugen on Sunday.

After Saturday’s loss to Washington Nationals, Phillies held a five-game lead over the New York Mets in NL-East.
