Pinterest has debuted a set of new AI-driven visual search tools
AI tools allow users to explore the fashion of vibe, mood or aesthetic
The results are aiming to help produce personalized shopping ideas
Pinterest has always been about visuals over text. Now using AI you can figure out how to describe these visual inspiration and even get a chance to buy your favorite topics, starting with women’s fashion.
A growing number of pins on Pinterest will have specific pieces of a clothing or aesthetically highlighted with a shiny animated glow. Click, say, the plaid skirt or blue jacket, and Pinterest shows you some of the words to describe the item and help you find more like that without you needing a fashion dictionary.
Pinterest uses generative AI and visual language models (VLMs) for the new features. VLMS translates essentially images into searchable terms, decoding your taste from an image and helping you shop for it. It is like a more nuanced reverse image search tool that can talk to you about your interest in living tones and stereounk plaid.
You are not expected to describe your dream clothes with perfect vocabulary. You are not expected to know what kind of tailoring makes a jacket “structured relaxed.” You just need to know that you liked one look for its mood. Pinterest takes it from there.
“Our visual search technology represents a shift in how users interact with and discover inspiration,” Pinterest Vice President of Design Dana Cho said in a statement. “We not only deliver search results – we curate a personal journey of discovery that allows individuals to find their unique style and also shop it.”

There are also other new AI features, including a new refinement line that allows you to finish results on the go. For example, if you like a look but want to change its color or styling, you can use the refining line to filter to them or other elements such as fabric.
And if you see something you want to use to start a visual search within the app, you just have to press it for a long time. Pinterest says it plans to expand the AI tools beyond women’s fashion in the end, but it makes sense that it would start there when it is such an important facet of the platform.
Pinterest’s new tools do not mean that it is completely confidence in AI. The company has also started adding new labels to AI modified or AI-Generated images and giving users the opportunity to see fewer of them via subject filters. It is a small but smart nod to the fact that inspiration is great, but that reality still matters when you shop for actual clothes.
Still, it’s an interesting approach to online shopping, and one that fits the way people act personally by looking at clothes, not just describe them. AI is like a personal shopper who understands that most people are dependent on visual impressions and mage feelings to decide what to buy, rather than knowing stitch patterns and trend conditions.
