Kavan Markwood, Pittsburgh Pirates fan, which fell over 20 meters at PNC Park Warning Track last week, has spoken for the first time since his terrible accident.

Markwood laid on dirt in the right field after turning several times through the air in the seventh lap of Pirates’ games against Chicago Cubs. Apart from the medical staff from both teams and EMS who ran out to assess Markwood, the whole ballpark was stunned by what they witnessed.

The 20-year-old suffered a broken neck, clavicle and back after the accident, but Markwood said he is “okay” despite the long way to improvement in front.

“I can’t really sleep. I have a lot of back pain,” he said to Triblive.

Markwood described his injuries as “broken everything” which also included a raised hand.

“I think when I get home, I just put ice cream on it,” he added.

A Gofundme was created by his boyfriend’s mother, Jennifer Phillips, and Markwood told Triblive that he is grateful for all the support he has been given to help with medical bills.

From Wednesday night, the Gofundme account raised more than $ 51,000.

Markwood took a big step in his recovery Monday and went for the first time.

“He shows real strength, and we remain hopeful for a smooth recovery, Phillips wrote as an update on the Gofundme side.” This will also require lots of rest and according to instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff in the hospital. “

After the accident, Markwood was rushed to Allegheny General Hospital’s Trauma Unit, where he was in critical condition.

Pittsburgh Public Safety branded what happened as an accident when fans around Markwood said he had become excited about a Pirates’ rally during the game and continued to take off his shirt and pour beer on himself before the fall, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune review.

Markwood played for two Division II football programs, Walsh University and Wheeling University. He played at Wheeling in 2023 and performed in four games, according to the team’s side.

Andrew McCutchen, who hit a double just before Markwood fell, sent a prayer out of X.

“Had really what happened tonight,” he wrote. “Can’t help think about the guy his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let’s think of his dear and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls through. May God bless you all. Good night.”
