The last round of Players Championship Was delayed due to weather and lightning on Sunday afternoon when Rory McIlroy held the only lead with a narrow margin more than halfway through his round.
The delay followed Saturday’s announcement that tee times would be moved up to avoid extending the last round to Monday.

“We’ve been going through this weather for three or four days, and unfortunately it has kept its pattern and it seems that this storm line will be quite intense,” said Stephen Cox, vice president of rules and tournament administration, via PGA TOURS Web site.

“Obviously, our favorite desire is to have a tee in two (somes), and this is the awkward balance that we are facing,” he continued. “If we roll the dice, as they say and try to play a tee in two (sometimes), we could easily find ourselves in a Monday finish.”

Players on Sunday played in groups of three to try to avoid delaying the last round further but lightning and rain in the area began to roll in on TPC Sawgrass Around 1 p.m. 13 local time.

The weather forecast for Ponte Vedra Beach, Floridaincluded strong winds and the great chance of thunderstorms that began around 1 p.m. 15:00, the weather was expected to last through the afternoon and early evening.
According to the PGA Tour, the last Monday ended on the players three years ago.
The latest update just before 7 p.m. 15.00 one said acting was expected to resume Sunday afternoon.
“PGA Tour officials are closely monitoring the weather and the game is expected to resume later in the afternoon,” the update reads.

McIlroy was at the top of the leaderboard when the delay was announced.
He was -4 under the final round through the first 11 holes and is only a stroke ahead of JJ Spaun, which is +1 through the first 10.
