Multibus episode 6 is now out on Apple TV – and amid its various talking points, viewers have expressed shock and delight at what some have dubbed the “cameo of the year”.
Apple TV Original’s latest chapter titled ‘HDP’ features a completely unexpected appearance from a major star. And if their cameo wasn’t surprising enough, it turns out their scene-stealing role was announced weeks ago.
Wait, is that John Cena in Pluribus episode 6?
Yep! About 19 minutes in Multibus‘ latest post, Carol is shown a video explaining what a shocked Carol found Multibus episode 5’s final scene. You can read more about the horrific discovery in this Multibus episode 6 semi-recap article.
Anyway, as the shoot begins, suddenly none other than beloved wrestler-actor John Cena appears on screen. What follows is a nearly three-minute monologue as Cena—who, like 99.99% of humanity, was not immune to the virus that caused The Joining—fills Carol in on some important details about the aforementioned discovery.
Not surprisingly, Apple TV viewers have flocked to social media platforms, including X/Twitter, and other places like ResetEra forums and r/Pluribus to offer their reactions to Cena’s wild cameo.
“I totally love out-of-nowhere celebs,” Redditor ialo00130 wrote, before adding: “This one had me confused for a few seconds before the laughter kicked in”. On ResetEra, user dphrygian said “The John Cena cameo was an incredible choice”, while forum frequenter Dalek simply wrote “Holy s**t this cameo”.
Meanwhile, some people who are also fans of Cena’s most notable role as Peacemaker in the DC Universe (DCU) and the now defunct DC Extended Universe had fun linking his appearance in one of the best Apple TV shows to his role in said comic series.
“Man they got Peacemaker,” wrote ResetEra user CM_Ace, while Redditor this_was_hard_to_do said, “someone needs to edit [Peacemaker] season 2 intro right after that line” in response to jboosmeezy commenting on the actor saying “we are John Cena” as part of his opening act.
Funnily enough, Cena actually announced his appearance in the sci-fi mystery drama weeks earlier.
Cena took to Instagram in late November and uploaded a photo of Rhea Seahorn’s main character from the pilot episode. It was still not accompanied by a caption, sparking several responses from his followers about the meaning behind said photograph. Well, now we have our answer.
In the latest episode of the official Pluribus Podcast, showrunner Vince Gilligan also revealed how the cameo came about.
In short: Cena filmed it on a rare day off, knocked it out of his multi-page monologue in his first take—Gilligan asked for two more so he’d have more takes to choose from—and, before they parted ways, Gilligan told him he couldn’t wait to watch the episode so Cena could understand what he’d just rambled on about.
Featuring Cena Better call Saul star Patrick Fabian on Multibus cameo list, some are now wondering who will be the next famous face to appear. Until now, I would have told someone off Breaking Bad but after Cena’s wild performance, I’ll take anyone at this point.
