Multibus episode 7 has landed on Apple TV – and while it doesn’t reveal anything new about The Others and/or The Joining, it’s still a very significant chapter.
Entitled ‘The Gap’, Multibus‘ latest post splits its time between protagonist Carol and Manousos. I theorized that a team up was at play in the wake of Multibus episode 6, and despite what happens to them – and Manousos in particular – in ‘The Gap’, I’m even more confident that they’ll cross paths soon.
Will Manousos die in Pluribus episode 7?
No. We don’t know if he survives the life-threatening injuries he sustains in ‘The Gap’. But given that he’s been positioned as an important character in the sci-fi mystery drama thus far, it would be an underwhelming end to his time on the show if he was killed off.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. The latest episode of the Apple TV series doesn’t reunite us with the Manousos, who are on a mission to track down Carol, until a third of its run time has passed. And for the next 10 minutes, we just watch Manousos travel across the country as he learns English—via a language course on cassette tape—so he’ll be able to communicate with Carol when they finally meet.
Finally, he reaches a point that his trusty top-down convertible cannot pass: the Darién Gap, a dense and dangerous 100 km wide rainforest that bridges Colombia and Panama. There he is met by a small group of The Others, who plead with Manousos not to attempt to trek through the remote and treacherous jungle.
If we’ve learned anything about one of the best Apple TV series protagonists, though, it’s that he’s nothing if not stubborn. So Manousos ignores De Andre’s plea and continues his quest to finally meet Carol.
Predictably, things will soon go south. Manousos slips on a rock and falls back, impaling himself on a Chunga palm tree, the bark of which is covered in 20cm spikes teeming with bacteria. As the others warned earlier, even the smallest cut can lead to a fatal infection. Being stabbed by several spines is therefore a recipe for disaster.
Manousos tries to burn the infection out of the wounds on his back using his axe, which he heats via a fire later that night. Unfortunately, this does not prevent his condition from worsening. The next day, maddened by the infection and physically exhausted by his hardships, a weakened Manousos collapses.
Just as all hope seems lost, The Others, whom Manousos has refused to entertain since we met him, come to his aid. Rescue workers arrive on the scene via helicopter, and while we don’t see them lift him to safety, it’s safe to assume they do so successfully.
The big question now is: where is Manousos? Since one of The Others told him they’d be happy to fly him to New Mexico so he can meet Carol in person, my best guess is that he’s been taken to a hospital in Albuquerque. If I’m right, we might be privy to the duo finally joining forces in episode 8 or this season’s finale.
Is Carol Trying to Kill Herself in Pluribus’ Seventh Episode?
In truth, things aren’t looking so peachy for Carol either.
Emboldened by learning that The Others cannot make her one of them without a) acquiring stem cells from her and b) doing so with her consent, Carol begins to live life to the fullest again. In fact, now that she knows she’s not living on borrowed time as one of 13 immunes left alive until The Joined find a way to get her to join them, Carol begins to indulge in all of life’s frivolities.
At least for a while. After the Manosos part of ‘The Gap’ ends, the story jumps forward 34 days before reuniting us with a depressed Carol. Sitting in front of her house, beer in hand and surrounded by fireworks that Carol has timed to go off at intervals, she is clearly struggling. Heck, Carol has even apparently prepared to bump herself off as one of the fireworks is positioned to shoot directly at her. Watch an extreme near-miss as it whizzes past her face before exploding and setting fire to the roof of a neighboring house.
The next day, we see Carol go to her local hardware store to grab a paint roller and a large tub of white paint, then use them to write something on the asphalt of her cul-de-sac.
As the above photo shows, Carol paints the words “come back”. The reason? Even the most misanthropic person in the world misses human interaction in real life. Watch a now recovered Zosia show up in Carol’s driveway, and after a somewhat awkward stand-off, an emotionally vulnerable Carol falls into Zosia’s arms, fighting back tears.
Episode 7’s final scene raises several questions. Is this the end of The Others’ self-imposed hiatus from Carol? Is Carol finally ready to work and live with them? Has Zosia actually forgiven Carol for almost killing her Multibus section 4? And will the status quo be upended again if (or rather, when) Carol and Manousos finally meet? Let’s hope all these questions are answered when episodes 8 and 9 land on one of the world’s best streaming services.
