PM lifts support to Dr. Aafia’s release

Islamabad:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Friday with Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui, sister of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, and assured that the government would continue to provide all possible legal and diplomatic support in the issue of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.

The meeting came when Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued contempt notes to the Prime Minister and other members of the federal cabinet last week for not having a response in the event of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a neuroscientist and teacher, was convicted by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on charges of murder trials of US staff in Afghanistan and has ousted his verdict in the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Carswell in the United States since 2010.

On July 12, IHC expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s failure to submit a report in the case of Aafia’s release, health and return, with Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq, who threatens to “convene the entire cabinet” if the report is not presented.

Justice Ishaq said in his court ruling that he had warned the additional legal lawyer while deciding his previous decision that further passivity from the government would lead to the issuance of a disdain.

“The government filed an appeal before the Supreme Court against my previous decision that allows changes to the petition to continue this case,” the order read. “For some reason, the government’s case had not been taken up by the Supreme Court.”

The prime minister during the meeting said the government is in no way negligent in terms of the case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.

The government has previously provided diplomatic and legal assistance in the event of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a press release issued by the PM office.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister not only wrote a letter to then US President Joe Bid on this issue, but also formed a committee led by the federal minister of law and justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, to ensure further progress in the case.

The committee remains in contact with Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui and will work to provide the necessary support in this regard, the statement added.
