PM orders Pressing relief as Karachi -Hjul from floods

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted the flooding situation in Karachi and parts of Sindh on Wednesday and directed National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to extend full support in relief efforts.

In a statement from the PM office, the Prime Minister called on the coordinated action between NDMA and Sindh Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to ensure effective rescue and rehabilitation operations.

“The federal and SINDH governments are fully mobilized to deal with the flood situation,” he said, stressing that helping affected families should be the highest priority. He also expressed grief over the deaths caused by floods in the Gadap stream, where several citizens were swept away in the storming stream.

He instructed all relevant authorities to accelerate the search for missing persons and secure timely assistance to flood victims. “The awareness campaign must be further activated to inform the public about the flood situation to protect citizens,” he added.

Prime Minister praised the ongoing rescue operations performed by Rescue 1122, the Pakistani Army and Rangers in Karachi, where several areas remain submerged due to recent rainfall.

He also called for quick action to recover damaged roads and communications networks across affected regions and warned that delays could inhibit both relief and mobility for relief services.

Karachi has been hit by yet another spell with intense monsoon rain, with flood water entering residential areas, damaged infrastructure and overwhelming city drainage system. Emergency teams are on duty, while several key routes have been closed or redirected due to rising water levels.

In the Gadap Towns Chark Nadi, a rickshaw and two vehicles with seven people on board were swept away by flooding water. So far, rescue teams have picked up four bodies, including a woman and her son, while the search continues for the missing.

Thado Dam flowed over and sent Torrents towards the motorway M – 9 – now cleared. The Superhighway near the Al Habib restaurant was immersed and forced a full traffic disorder between Karachi and Hyderabad.

National Highway & Motorway Police confirmed flooding water crossed the highway limit while barriers were removed to enable controlled flow.

Low -lying suburbs near the Super Highway then water depths up to five meters. Rescue teams that have been deployed quickly are working to evacuate residents. “The central barrier on the highway has been removed to divert the flood and reopened traffic,” a spokesman for CM House said.

Flood waves have ravaged Saadi Town, Malir, Sohrab Goth, Machchar Colony, Khamisu Jhokhio Goth and New Karachi. There are reports that many vehicles were swept away by the flood water. Rescue 1122, Edhi Foundation and Rangers teams are in the affected areas to extend helping hand to the stranded people.
