PM Shehbaz calls CCI meeting today as channel protests continue

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday convened a meeting of the Council for Common Interest (CCI) to tackle the controversy of the construction of new channels on the river in Indus, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said.

The meeting, which was originally scheduled for May 2, was invited to the request of the Sindh government and is ready to take place in Islamabad later today.

Chief ministers from all four provinces together with Attorney General Azam Nazeer Tarar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal are expected to participate.

Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Suspension announced new channel projects until a special committee formed to undergo concerns when a consensus. He emphasized that no one -sided decisions about channel construction would be made without agreement between the provinces.

The Water Distribution Agreement of 1991 controls the water distribution from the Indus River among provinces, with the Indus River System Authority (IRSA), which is responsible for its implementation and dispute resolution.

Meanwhile, Sit-in protests continued and closes strikes across different cities in Sindh against the proposed construction of six new channels.

Earlier, Shariel Inam Memon called on all political parties and the Law Society to reopen roads to ensure smooth transport of goods and prevent further financial losses.

He warned that the closure of highways affects the public, livestock movement, import exports activities, farmers and the poor.

“The closure of highways has affected the public, pets, imports, exports, farmers and the poor,” Memon said, calling for steps to be taken immediately to restore traffic.

Memon praised the “tireless efforts and the effective strategy” used by Bilawal, which he said had successfully resolved the channel conflict. He emphasized that the question has now been treated completely.

“This question will be permanently closed after the official CCI meeting,” he said.
