Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation with the United Nations to tackle the critical issues of sustainable development and climate change.
During a meeting with the UN resident coordinator in Pakistan, Mohamed Yahya, Sharif Pakistan’s obligation to fight climate change confirmed and highlighted the need for continued partnership with the international community and the UN.
The prime minister praised the valuable work done by the UN’s national team in Pakistan, especially their efforts under the country’s climate -related challenges. Sharif also expanded his warm greetings to UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres and recalled his leadership and the important support he received to Pakistan during the devastating floods of 2022.
A key point of discussion was the need for climate financing, which Sharif emphasized as an important component of tackling the effects of climate change. He urged nations to honor their financial obligations to the cause and emphasized the importance of fulfilling these obligations to support climate fine and adaptation efforts globally.
Pakistan’s continued cooperation with the UN was also highlighted, especially when implementing various climate change projects. In addition, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of bridging the financing gap to meet the goals of sustainable development (SDG). He also spoke to the increased representation of developing countries in international financial institutions and called for reforms in the global financial architecture to better reflect the needs of new economies.
The meeting attended several senior officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister of Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and PM’s coordinator of climate change, Mrs. Romina Khursheed alam.
