Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Wednesday with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss national security and the ongoing repatriation of Afghan citizens.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the Naqvi Prime Minister informed the security measures that were in place under Eidul Fitr and progress in the return of undocumented foreigners and Afghan citizen card owners.
PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction over the peaceful environment during Eid and praised the efforts of law enforcement authorities.
The meeting also included a review of questions related to the Ministry of the Interior, focusing on enforcement actions following the Deadline for Afghan repatriation.
From the previous deadline, 886,242 Afghans had returned home. Officials confirmed that lawsuits will now be initiated against those who remain in violation of the policy.
Meanwhile, the federal government has postponed a deadline for the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Afghans due to Eidul Fitr holidays.
The government had initially set a deadline for March 31 for Afghans having specific evidence to leave the country, which intensified efforts to repatriate Afghan citizens.
However, the government has now extended the deadline until the beginning of next week due to the holiday period, according to an official.
Afghans holding Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) – issued by Pakistani authorities and allegedly owned by 800,000 people, according to the United Nations – will be exposed to deportation when the new deadline expires.
