Former Senator Abbas Afridi has gone away from injuries inflicted in a suspected gas leak explosion at his residence in Kohat’s Azim Bagh area, family sources confirmed to the Express Pakinomist.

The incident took place on Thursday night, after which Afridi and three others were critically wounded. Originally treated at the combined military hospital (CMH) in Kohat, Afridi was later transferred to Burn Center in Kharian for specialized care. Despite medical efforts, he bent during his injuries.

Abbas Afridi was the senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and belonged to a prominent political family.

He was the brother of the former MPA and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Provincial Information Secretary Amjad Afridi and Son of Senator Shamim Afridi.

In a separate but politically tangled development on Thursday, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of the former Kohat District Nazim Malik Asad Khan, including Malik Amjad Afridi brother of the deceased Abbas Afridi.

At a press conference held at Kohat Police Club, District Police Officer (DPO) revealed Dr. Zahidullah Khan that the murder plot was orchestrated in Malik Amjad Afridi’s residence.

The suspects in custody include Afridi, his nephew Hussain Afridi and three others identified as Hashim alias Sheno Gulzeb, Nemat Amir and Yasir.

According to police, Nemat Amir was arrested in Islamabad, which provided key information during interrogations, which led to arrests of the remaining suspects.

Law enforcement authorities also reported to recover weapons from all the defendants.

The suspects are currently in police custody-afridi on a five-day detention, and the others in seven days-as investigation continue.

Authorities claim that Afridi and his nephew contained attackers and facilitated their escape.
