Rawalpindi:
PTI -Vice President Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that like PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is remembered as the architect of the 1973 Constitution, the existing PPP leaders -Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari -will be remembered to call it.
“PML-N and PPP have dealt with an irreversible battle for democracy in the country. We were first witnessing the dissolution of the country in 1971. Now we witness it on our way to another downfall,” the PTI leader who is imprisoned In Lahores Kot Lakhpat Prison said Thursday.
Qureshi, who served as the country’s foreign minister under PTI’s rule, spoke with journalists in Rawalpindi, where he had been brought to attend a hearing.
When he spoke with reference to PTI founder Imran Khan’s letter to the army chief General Syed Asim Munir, he said he had heard of the letter but did not read it. “We should look at the intention of Imran Khan as he will solve problems,” he said. On February 3, one of IMRAN’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry revealed that the former prime minister has written a letter to General Asim Munir, criticizing the establishment’s policies and calling for a review of its approach to national security and governance.
The letter sent from Adiala Prison highlighted IMRAN’s concerns about what he described as a growing interruption between the military and the public.
Imran claimed that “the establishment supports those who have twice taken advantage of the National Reconciliation Regulation (NRO)”, a reference to previous political settlements that enabled leaders to avoid charges of corruption.
Qureshi said that national consensus is important for reforms in the country as no person alone has the ability to tackle these challenges. He said the current leadership should think of the nation with a calm and rational mindset.
“There is a need to eliminate hate and bridge departments. Forgiveness is needed and we need to move forward. At this point there is a need for a national agenda – there must be a large national agreement through which all political parties agree on an independent and Autonomous Election Commission.
“An independent and autonomous election commission cannot hurt anyone; if someone loses an election today, they can win in the future. Likewise, an independent court and a free media will not hurt anyone. One can always find mistakes, but now is the time it is time to Focus on positive things, ”he said.
