Pakistani Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) announced on Saturday that they would contest the upcoming election under a common strategy, which did not accept field candidates against each other.
The announcement came after a meeting held at PPP’s senior leader and former Prime Minister Raja Perez Ashraf. The PML-N delegation included federal minister Hanif Abbasi and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, while PPP was represented by former Prime Minister Ashraf and Nayyar Hussain Bukhari.
At a joint press conference after the meeting, both parties confirmed that they would cooperate in the election, based on a constituency’s seat adjustment formula.

“Our management has ordered us to work together for these choices,” Raja Perez told Ashraf to journalists. “The agreement is that no matter which party was runner-up in a particular constituency during the parliamentary election, the second support will be received.”
Hanif Abbasi repeated the message of unity and repeated the strength of the alliance. “We are coalition partners in the National Assembly, the Senate and Provincial Legislators. This partnership will now extend into by-balls. Together we will achieve victory,” he said.
The leaders confirmed their commitment and noted that the past elections were disputed under the same understanding. “We have already disputed in election according to this formula and will continue to do so,” Abbasi said.
The agreement comes after several rounds with conversations between PPP and PML-N leaders in recent months. The two sides have worked to ensure smoother power sharing schemes in Punjab and to maintain political stability at the national level.
Previously, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to express his party’s reservations. After the meeting, Prime Minister PPP insured to tackle his concerns and promised continued cooperation.
PPP, on the other hand, confirmed its full support for the government’s financial resuscitation plans under the Prime Minister’s leadership.
