Policeman shot death in KP as nationwide polio vaccination drive begins

A police officer was killed on Monday while on his way to providing security for polio vaccinators in Jamrud Town, located in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The officer, who was identified as a constable, was allegedly attacked by two people on a motorcycle that opened fire against him, reported Express News.

The wounded officer was immediately moved to the hospital for medical treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries. The slain officer has been identified as Abdul Khaliq.

After receiving information about the attack, a heavy quota of the police reached the stage, closed the area and launched a search operation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched on Sunday the first nationwide anti-polio campaign, which ran from February 3 to 9 by administering polio drops to children under five and confirming his commitment to removing the disease from Pakistan.

When he spoke at the campaign’s launch, the leader emphasized his willingness to free the country polio.

“National polio vaccination drive would target millions of children to save their future and health,” he said.

The prime minister paid tribute to the inauguration of vaccination teams and expressed confidence that they would work “day and night to eradicate the disease and would reach the far -reaching areas and villages”.

He said the teams would bear their responsibilities with “complete energy and commitment”.

A few days ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) praised Pakistan for reducing polio cases by over 99% since 1994, confirming its commitment to helping the country end the final extermination phase.

Despite significant progress, the disease has seen a resurgence in some of Pakistan’s most unstable regions, and challenges remain in the fight against polio.

WHO, who recognized Pakistan’s efforts, emphasized that it would continue to support the country in “running the last mile” to end the paralyzing disease.

This message was delivered under Islamabad’s hosting of the technical advisory group for polio -depletion, a key forum that brings together global experts to strategize to eliminate the global poliotus threat.
