- Says federal governments focus mainly on military operations.
- PTI Govt pursued conversations with TTP from 2018 to 2022: Report.
Pakistan’s efforts to limit the recent increase in terrorism is hampered by internal political departments, especially over different approaches between the center and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) the government, according to a report published by The diplomat – A US-based publication focused on politics, security in the Indo-Stillhav area.
According to the report, the divergence of policies has made it challenging for political leadership to develop an overall, comprehensive strategy to tackle the escalating threat of militant conditions across the country.
Pakistan has witnessed an increase in cross-border terrorist incidents since the Taliban Herders returned to Afghanistan in 2021, especially in the bordering provinces of KP and Balochistan.
The report stated that internal political dynamics, including various strategies persecuted by the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI)-led provincial government in KP, have complicated the fight against terrorism.
“Pakistan’s strategy for terrorist strategy has historically turned between kinetic operations against militant groups and dialogue. For example, Imran Khan’s term of office as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, PTI pursued a negotiating-heavy policy to control the TTP threat. Rehabilitation Group.
However, according to the report, critics in Pakistan’s decision-making circles argued that this was also an attempt by the KP-based political groups to reassure the Afghan Taliban to win their cooperation against TTP.
“The policy was apparently aimed at promoting Goodwill with Kabul. However, it remained when it ended up only Embange militants who had returned to Pakistan and gave way to cross -border infiltration,” the report states.
The report said Islamabad seems to have learned the hard lessons at AppeaSement. Consequently, the established Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) -LED coalition government as well as state institutions have excluded both negotiations with TTP.
In KP, where PTI has power, however, it does not appear that PTI nones-with-TTP policy shift has been fully embraced by the provincial government, it added.
