Islamabad:
Pakistan Peoples Party Human Rights Cell (PPP-HRC) President on Friday proposed a four-point solution to tackle the ongoing water issues in the country that demanded the federal government to pay tribute to the controversial Indus Canals project.
Speaking at a press conference with PPP-HRC Secretary-General Maliaka Raza, Vice President Zulqarnain Ashghar and Member Samina Salam, Babar warned that building new channels in Punjab, who threatened Sindh in the midst of a unified water-knotty, was a “thoughtless and irresponsible” feature.
Babar suggested to declare a national drought emergency in the country, a shift from huge infrastructure development projects to water protection and improved water management, healthy population policy and an end to the culture of elite uptake.
“The building of six new channels in Punjab, which disregards the important interest in the lower riparian Sindh and destroys its agriculture and farmers, is a case of elite capture of state resources rather than disharmony between provinces,” the former senator said.
