Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Candidate Waqar Mehdi on Tuesday secured victory in the Senate by choosing a general seat from Sindh after Senator Taj Haider’s death.
According to a spokesman for the Election Commission in Pakistan (ECP), Mehdi received 111 votes and defeated Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistans (MQM-P) candidate Nighat Mirza, who reconciled 36. Two votes were rejected due to incorrect marking.
The vote was held at the Sindh assembly from 1 p.m. 9 to 16 without any break. Provincial Election Commissioner and Recurring Officer Ejaz Anwar Chauhan confirmed that 149 legislators cast their votes during the process.
The Senate seat had fallen vacant after the departure of PPP’s veteran legislator Taj Haider. Mehdi will now serve in Parliament’s top house until March 2027.
