Hyderabad:

The nationalist and anti-channel activists have built up pressure on Pakistan Peoples Party for withdrawing his support to the federal government. In response to the pressure, PPP Sindh president, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, has said that his party’s street protest is the first step towards building pressure on the government.

At a press conference in Hyderabad on Thursday, Khuhro repeated that PPP is criticized for strengthening the PML-N government and its policies.

“But contrary to it is that we are neither in the central government, nor do we have a federal ministry.” He claimed that PPP’s sole purpose behind what is perceived as the support of the N-League government is to see continuity in democracy.

He maintained that President Asif Ali Zardari has no authority to sanction or reject projects regarding the construction of six new channels on the Indus River. He said the project was also not brought to parliament for approval.

Khuhro said PPP had reluctantly accepted the water decision in 1991, but the current government wants to change this agreement. He pointed out that the Council of Common Interest (CCI) is the platform to solve disputes as water sharing among the provinces. However, he regretted that CCI’s meeting has not been called for years.

“Over 4 million hectares of land in downstream of Kotri barrier have become uncultivable due to water -knithed,” he complained. “But I feel sad that N-League has not learned anything from the political storm that the Kalabagh dam had created in the country.” Khuhro also accused PML-N of silently accepting the construction of Thall Canal by a military general. He explained that water to the controversial cholistan channel aimed at turning the desert region into a scattered green will be drawn from Indus through the River Greater Thall Canal and Sutlej.
