If you were not a fan of the police procedural Bosch or its subsequent spinoff Bosch: LegacyThere is a good chance that you are ready to write off Prime Video’s latest rate, Ballard. Despite being released only on July 9, the new TV show has already received an astonishing 100% critical rating on the rat Tomatoes … and that is excellent news for the franchise as a whole.
But it is not only the crushing review score that is responsible for Ballard’s success. If you haven’t already seen it on our all new coming to Prime Video in July 2025 list, the LAPD Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) will follow as she oversees a cold case in a new department. As you might imagine, it’s not as straightforward as that.
Don’t let Bosch: Legacy Depreciate you from trying Ballard Since it has not been a fantastic example for crime fans who want to settle. Sure that the critic’s score is still stacking up (it also had 100% on Rotten Tomatoes), but Harry Bosch’s (Titus Welliver) retirement was more of the same and it got tired and out of date as the years. Even if we drove a policeman first into a snooze party, don’t stain Ballard with the same brush.

Honestly there has never been a better time to be a Bosh: Legacy hate than now. Ballard’s Returning to the small screen has made stimulating and fresh crime drama look so effortless, it’s difficult to see how the franchise avoided a new lease for so long. The fact that we only briefly met Ballard even during the final of Bosch: Legacy Don’t hurt (she is a big part of Michael Connelly’s original book series), but the new show sprint against success runs much deeper than that.
We start strongly with Maggie Q’s Casting – The actress is undoubtedly underestimated in the action movie genre she cultivates as her own (Mission: Impossible III remains the best in my book and she should have had a two-movie arch at least). Her cold-case detective is sharp and commanding, merciless in light of the city’s challenges. So far, so good.
Then there are the stories yourself. Ballard Choosing not to play it safely and extends the danger we will normally see within the department of personal life for the characters we grow attached to. Ballard beats up a penetrating that comes into her home, Samira Parker (Courtney Taylor) is not afraid of being a voice for the most vulnerable victims, and corrupt police behavior is postponed and tackled without hesitation.
Prime Video has also played it smartly by including Bosch as a como role in the new series. Those who valued the main series and Bosch: Legacy doesn’t have to do without him but there is more than enough respiratory space to Ballard to become its own program. There are no shadows to stand here.
So what are you waiting for? Ballard is the new TV show you need to stream this week. If nothing else, you might be inspired to kick a door down (or two).
