Rahm claimed that at least one spectator made a distracting noise as he tried his backswing.

“Really? Fluttering? Right, Good Time,” Rahm said. “Right on my backswing. Very smart, no matter what it was.”

It was not clear whether cameras for the TV broadcast picked up the sound of the alleged whistling noise. Rahm later neglected the excited exchange he had with the spectator, criticizing his emotional reaction to the “bad timing” of that noise.

“I mean, if I had to paint a picture, you have the hardest tee shot on the field, raining, into the wind from the left, it’s enough,” Rahm told the overall media. “I know they don’t do it on purpose. It just seemed like someone who was trying to get hold of someone no matter what it is. It was bad timing.”

Rahm admitted he had “a bad turn.”

“I think I just used the moment to let go of the excitement I had in me. It’s really not – that’s what it is. To be honest it probably didn’t affect as much as I made it sound. It was also a bad swing. Just a difficult hole.

“I mean it’s frustrating, but that’s what it is. It’s an everyday thing in golf,” Rahm concluded.

The 30-year-old went into the last big tournament of the season off the heels of a second place at Liv Golf’s event in Spain. Rahm had his best performance in Open in 2023 when he ended up with a draw to the runner-up place.

He won the US Open in 2021 and Masters Tournament in 2023.
