Prof Adib Rizvi, founder of Siut, honored with the British Medical Journal Award

Prof Dr. Adib Rizvi, founder of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), has received the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Award for its excellent contribution to medical sciences in South Asia.

The award awarded during a New Delhi ceremony was accepted at Dr. Rizvis behalf of Dr. Sanjay Nagra, co -chair of BMJ Advisor Board.

Dr. Nagra praised Dr. Rizvis efforts to establish a health system that offers free, available and fair treatment in Pakistan, and called it a model for developing nations.

For the purpose of the audience via Zoom, Dr. Rizvi Gratitude for the honor and famous BMJ’s role in promoting medical education and research.

He urged countries in the region to look beyond political differences for improving marginalized societies and improved public health results.

Dr. Adib Rizvi is a prominent Pakistani transplant surgeon, humanitarian and founder of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (Siut). His groundbreaking efforts have significantly transformed Pakistan’s health landscape, especially in urology and organ transplantation.

In 1970, Dr. Rizvi a Urology Department of Eight Beds at Karachi’s Civil Hospital that laid the basis for Siut. Over the years, Siut has evolved into South Asia’s largest urology, nephrology and transplant center and offers extensive services for free.

The institute now treats over a million patients annually and provides services such as dialysis, lithotripsy, oncological treatments and organ transplants.

Dr. Rizvi has been a strong spokesman for ethical medical practice. He played a key role in the adoption of the transplantation of human organs and tissues in 2010, legalizing cadaveric organ donation and limiting the unethical organ trade in Pakistan. His efforts have been instrumental in normalizing organ transplantation in the country.

Recognition and awards

Dr. Rizvis unwavering obligation to humanitarian healthcare has earned him several recognitions including:

  • Ramon Magsaysay Award (1998)

  • Hamdan -Award for Volunteers in Humanitarian Medical Services (2004)

  • WHO’S SHOUSHA PRIZE (2008)

  • Lifetime Achievement Award of Sindh Association of North America (2015)

  • Nishan-i-imtiaz (2018), one of Pakistan’s highest civilian prices
