Former Senate President Mian Raza Rabbani has criticized the federal government for not maintaining transparency in ending an oil research agreement with the United States published through a tweet by the US president on Wednesday night.
In a press release issued on Thursday, Rabbani said it was “a sad day of transparency and good governance,” as the population of Pakistan had to learn about such an agreement through social media rather than formal government channels.
He reminded the federal government that the provinces under Article 172 (2). “Such offers and projects fall into constitutional provisions and cannot be completed one -sided,” he said.
Rabbani called for greater institutional supervision demanded that the government take parliament in confidence in what he called “Western oriented initiatives.”
He further urged the federal authorities to convene a meeting of the Council for Common Interests (CCI) to engage all provinces in discussions on the oil agreement and similar future projects.
The United States signed a trade agreement with Pakistan, US President Donald Trump said Wednesday, hours after announcing 25% duty on imports from India in addition to unspecified “punishment” over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian weapons and energy.

Trump said the deal with Pakistan included joint development of the country’s “massive” oil reserves. The message came as the negotiations continue with other nations, including South Korea, in front of his self -imposed on August 1st.
“We have just concluded an agreement with the country Pakistan, where Pakistan and the United States will work together to develop their massive oil reserves,” Trump wrote in the post of his social media platform of ‘Truth Social’.

“We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership. Who knows, maybe they will sell oil to India one day!” The US president wrote in his post without providing further details of the deal.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his role in ending a “historic” trade agreement between Pakistan and the United States.
“I want to convey my deep thanks to President Trump for his leadership role in the completion of the historic trade agreement in the US-Pakistan, successfully completed by our two sides in Washington last night,” the prime minister wrote on his X-Time Line.

He said the “landmark” agreement would improve the growing bilateral cooperation to expand the boundaries of a sustained partnership in the coming days.
