Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Monday rejected any connection between his party and the recently introduced ‘Pakistan Democracy Act’ in the US Representative House seeking sanctions against Pakistani officials over alleged human rights violations.
In a speech with journalists in the House of Parliament, Gohar said: “Countless legislation and decisions are adopted in the US Congress. PTI has no connection with this particular bill.” He also clarified that the party has had no contact with the US delegation currently visiting Pakistan.
The bill introduced last month by two US legislators invokes global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act and calls for sanctions against people accused of pursuing PTI founder Imran Khan. It proposes a visa ban and entry restrictions for Pakistani officials who are allegedly involved in human rights violations.
As for political development, Gohar said PTI would end his future strategy after forming an alliance with other opposition parties. He noted that Jui-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is expected to announce his party’s position on April 15 after internal consultations.
PTI has accelerated the efforts to form a magnificent opposition alliance after Eidul Fitr.
Last month, the formally tehreek-e-tahaffuz-e-oyeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) launched a coalition that includes Sunni Itthad-Council Wahdat-E-Muslime (MWM).
In a separate move, PTI also reached the former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to participate in the anti-government movement. Gohar said that internal discord within PTI said, “It is a democratic party and everyone is free to express their opinion,” while calling for leaders to deal with party cases internally.
