PTI rejects CB decision on military courts

Islamabad:

Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf directly rejects the Supreme Court’s decision, which allows civilian trials in military courts and says it will lead to a constitutional crisis. The party urged Chief Justice to form a full court to run the question.

PTI leader Salman Akram Raja approached it to a press conference in Islamabad after the SC decision and said the constitution had been attacked. “It’s the darkest day of my career as a lawyer,” Raja said, adding, “The whole nation feels grief over today’s judgment.”

He said the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court had handed down a judgment that undermined the progress of the last 80 years. With reference to Article 175 (2).

According to the decision, Army Officers will decide the fate of civilians behind closed doors, Raja said, adding that they could award life period or the death penalty in their discretion. He emphasized that Pakistan would be the only country where civilians will be prosecuted by military courts.

He said a five-member bench previously called military courts constitutional and illegal. Then an appeal was filed in 2023 against the decision. In October 2024, the 26th constitutional amendment was adopted and a constitutional bench was formed with judges who chose, the PTI leader said.

He said CB’s decision has deprived Pakistan’s citizens in fair attempts.

In the apartment, Babar Awan said the SC decision has led to a new constitutional crisis.
