In a unanimous agreement between the government and the opposition, Junaid Akbar Khan, a member of Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI), has been elected chairman of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The PAC meeting, led by special secretary Muhammad Mushtaq, then key members of both the reigning party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and the opposition nominate Junaid Akbar to the role.
Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry of PML-N, opposition leader Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz from PTI suggested Akbar’s name, which was approved by PML-N senator AFNAN Ullah Khan and Qasim Noon.
Members from both PTI and PML-N, including Riaz Fatyana from PTI, also expressed their support to Akbar, which eventually led to his election as PAC chairman.
In his appointment, Akbar expressed his gratitude to all members for their support. He mentioned that although he had hoped that Sheikh Waqa’s Acram would take the role of chairman, he was honored with the responsibility.
Despite serving for 11 years as a member of the National Assembly, Akbar admitted that this was his first experience with PAC and promised to perform his duties effectively in collaboration with other members.
“I am grateful to the government and my party for this responsibility. I will do my best to fulfill it well and I will learn from my senior colleagues,” said Junaid Akbar Khan, adding that he would perform the tasks that his Leadership had assigned him to the best of his ability.
PTI had also revised its panel of proposed names and removed Akram in favor of Adil Bazei. Before the final decision was made, the National Assembly’s chairman, Ayaz Sadiq, had informed the opposition of the upcoming election and asked the PAC members to stay in Islamabad for consultations.
