Punjab launches first air quality forecast system

The Punjab government has launched Pakistan’s first advanced air quality forecast system, a landmarks designed to limit pollution and provide accurate forecasts for major cities, including Lahore and Faisalabad. The system issues weekly public reports that predict both weather conditions and pollution levels to guide authorities and citizens in the management of environmental risks.

When he spoke at the inauguration, provincial senior minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the new system combines real -time surveillance with advanced scientific models and will be integrated with international platforms such as Windy and European Forecast Models. “It will work in line with global air quality index while she also meets local requirements,” she said.

The system will draw data from Punjab’s modern air quality monitoring stations, of which 41 are already operational, to provide detailed assessments of weather patterns and pollution levels. Officials said the number of surveillance stations will be expanded to 100 in the coming months. In addition to predicting, the system will give citizens advice on health protection, especially for vulnerable groups.

Aurangzeb emphasized that the initiative would strengthen scientific foundations for decision -making. The system is part of Punjab’s wider smog control plan, which requires a strict action against crop residue burning, steps to reduce vehicles and industrial emissions and tighter enforcement of environmental regulations, she added.

She urged citizens to cooperate with the government’s efforts to fight pollution and warn about the health risks that smog poses. “During smog episodes, children, the elderly and patients with respiratory diseases should take extra precautions and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure,” she advised.
