Islamabad:

A total of 68 cases of abduction of children and 48 cases of sexual abuse were reported in the federal capital, among eight documented categories of crimes against children, including human trafficking, children’s marriage, child labor, physical abuse, murder and child pornography, based on data from the Islamabad police under the right to information law.

According to the latest report from the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO), Islamabad registered the highest number of reported crimes against children in the categories of abduction and sexual abuse, yet the beliefs remained insignificant in 2024.

Despite being submitted to case challenges, most cases remain during investigation or lawsuits, where very few result in conviction.

SSDOS CEO SYED KAUSAR ABBAS said data on crimes against children should regularly be published by the police and courts under the right to access the Information Act 2017 to strengthen transparency and accountability.

The data shows another 14 cases of physical abuse, six of children’s marriage and two each of children’s trade, murder and child pornography.

The report also notes that several cases were withdrawn, reflecting serious gaps in investigative quality, evidence collection and protection of victims and witnesses.

Abbas said the low conviction speed highlights deeply rooted deficiencies in the justice system.

He warned that crimes against children will continue unabated unless urgent reforms are implemented in investigation, prosecution and sacrificial support mechanisms.

He recommended the establishment of specialized investigative units, fast-track courts and robust victim and witness protection programs to ensure quick and effective justice.
