Rory McIlroy may have some serious driver problems going into next week’s USA Open.
The Masters winner in 2025 missed the clip with 12 strokes on the RBC Canadian Open and shoots an 8-over 78 on Friday, which was his second highest score in any PGA Tour event for his career.
The last time McIlroy shot a 78 was in the first round of the open in 2024.

McIlroy said his round “concerns me” and what professional golfer would not be worried after carding a quadrupled bogey as well as a double bogey and four bogeys for only two birdies.
“You don’t want to shoot high scores like the one I did today,” McIlroy said pr. Espn. “Still, I felt like I was coming here with a new driver who thought it would be good and solve some of the problems from the tee, but it didn’t.”

McIlroy’s driver has been a weight point since the PGA championship last month, where it was leaked that he had a non-conforming driver who was useless after testing before tournament.
Scottie Scheffler, the winner of the Quail Hollow Club that week, also had a non -conforming driver, but his name was not publicly known. However, McIlroy was crossed from his name came out and he jumped with media sessions throughout the tournament. He continued to end the T-47.
Before starting this week in Toronto, McIlroy admitted to being upset that his driver Conundrum had been announced.

“I was a little on —- d off because I knew Scottie’s driver had failed on Monday, but my name was the one that was leaked,” McIlroy said at a press conference via the New York Post. “It should remain confidential. Two members of the media were those who leaked it.
“I didn’t want to come up there and say something that I regretted either because I try to protect Scottie. I don’t want to name his name. I am trying to protect Taylormade, I try to protect USGA, because of America, myself.”
So McIlroy’s tee shot should be under a microscope this week because he wanted to work with a new driver and it wasn’t as consistent as it usually is.
McIlroy is one of the best drivers on tour, which is currently ranking first in strokes obtained by TEE, while he was third within driving distance with an average shot of 319.3 yards.

But with Rough at Oakmont Country Club, which has the ability to swallow golf balls and destroy rounds next week at the US Open, McIlroy’s accuracy must be much better than it has been. He ranks 170. In driving accuracy and hits the fairway 51.13% of the time.
At least being cut out of this week’s tournament gives McIlroy a few days to find out his driver before teaing it up on the US Open Thursday.
