Karachi:
The Auditor for Pakistan has revealed losses of more than RS22 billion in Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) engineering operations, according to the audit report for 2024–25.
The report marked two major cases of financial loss. In one case, losses exceeded RS14 billion due to grounded aircraft, including six Boeing 777s owned by Pia and two ATR-72 aircraft taken on leasing.
The auditors noted that the losses came from non -compliance with maintenance time lines and delays in the disposal of defective engines. The Boeing aircraft remained grounded for different periods between March 11, 2020 and March 1, 2021.

The audit section highlighted a further loss of RS6 billion caused by 25 other permanent ground -affected aircraft engines. The losses took place because the engines were neither recycled nor disposed of in time.
The report also revealed that around RS3 billion had been paid for Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) compared to these grounded aircraft while there were separate financial damage in parking fees.
These questions are lasting since Pia’s special audit, which covers 2008–2017.
Sources said that although a department of departmental accounts (DAC) was scheduled in January 2025 to review the case, it was never called.
