New York Giants was disappointing again in the opening of a new NFL season and asked the question from fans: How long is Russell Wilson’s leash at quarterback?
At least it’s long enough for another week when head coach Brian Daboll said Monday after the loss 21-6 to the Washington commanders on the road, which Wilson will practice this week as the team starts before their match against Dallas Cowboys.
“Russ will be a starter,” he said when asked by journalists at the team’s facility in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Daboll was asked immediately after the game if Wilson is still his guy moving on and he left it open to interpretation after not being definitive. Giants acted back to the first round to grab Jaxson Dart, their hopeful quarterback in the future. After a strong preseason, Dart is waiting for his first opportunity for regular season.
“It’s an emotional game. It’s a hard game. Didn’t play very well, I want to say collectively. But in terms of taking any of these decisions – really at any position or schematic changes – I’d like to do it with a clear head and see the tape,” Daboll said. “Again, as I said yesterday, that game doesn’t fall on Russell Wilson. We have to do a better job collectively – coaching, play – but Russ will be starting.”

Wilson’s Giants debut in regular season did not go according to plan. He was only 17-of-37 in 168 yards with a 45.9% completion rate in the loss. But as Daboll mentioned, the whole loss was not at Wilson.

Quarterback has been the punching bag for Giants fans in the past few seasons. Daniel Jones, who had a phenomenal debut with Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, was exposed to the middle season in 2024 due to poor performance. But once again, Giants’ offensive line turned out to be a major problem that contributed to the poor production.
Wilson was pressed on 22 of his 45 dropbacks – an almost 50% rate – which will not get the job done on game day. Due to the amount of pressure, Wilson did not go through his readings and quickly had to get the ball out, resulting in unanswered throws and minimal winnings.
Giants also expanded a terrible strip as they did not score a touchdown in their third equal seasonal first time since the Detroit Lions 1940-42. They have combined for 12 total points in their last three season openers.

But Daboll, who is definitely on the hot seat that goes into this season, with owner John Mara, who wants to see better results in the victory staff column, sticking with the veteran signal call instead of going rookie on her way into another division match against cowboys, which is also 0-1 after falling to Philadelphia Eagles on “Thursday Night Football.”
