Athletics were far from the only baseball team in Sacramento, California, where they received criticism at the start of the season.
The smaller league organization in the city generated some heat last week.
Sacramento River Cats was set to participate in a recent smaller League -Baseball tradition -to change their teams for a period of time to promote their alternative identity. For example, the Somerset Patriots played like Jersey eateries, and Lehigh Valley Ironpigs are set to compete as Lehigh Valley Tomato Pie, just to name a few.

River cats were set to play as Sacramento Gold Diggers, apparently a setback to California Gold Rush. The city of Sacramento was a refuge for goldgruve workers in the late 1840s and was transformed into a thriving community and incorporated into California in 1850.
“Inspired by the regional history of California Gold Rush, this new identity gives a connection to the significant influence of this era, where Sacramento grew as the nearest big city for the gold fields,” the team said in a news announcement on Thursday via Sacramento Bee.

The team released a video showing the team name, but also leaned into an old trope when it showed two women with dollar signs on their eyes when they saw a player.
The video, which has since been deleted from the team’s social media pages, caused some indignation and the organization turned their decision on the name.

“Our recent marketing campaign for an alternative identity clearly missed the brand,” the team said in a statement. “Our intention was to creatively refer to the rich story of Sacramento and Gold Country, but our approach was wrong and we are sorry for the mistake. We will no longer use this identity.”
