A proposal to increase wages and benefits for members of parliament (MPs) to match the federal secretaries have been approved by the National Assembly’s Finance Committee, Express News reported.
After the approval, a summary has been sent to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for further review. According to sources within the Assembly Secretariat, the monthly salary and benefits of members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and senators will be set at 519,000 Pakistani Rupees.
These recommendations have been forwarded to Prime Minister Sharif for approval. The measure comes after a claim from 67 members of the Pakistani Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) party about an increase in their wages.
Other political parties, including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), also supported wage increases. After approval, MPs will enjoy facilities similar to those of federal secretaries.
While some parliamentarians had requested a monthly salary of 1 million rupees, President Ayaz Sadiq rejected this requirement. As part of the financial budget for 2024-2025, the Finance Committee has been authorized to decide on wage increases for MPs.
