Samsung’s earplugs could get a big boost for their sound quality and collected performance by using the same technique as the company’s own Smarttags and Apple Airtags: UWB.
Ultra broadband, like Bluetooth, is a short range wireless technology. It works in different frequency ribbons for Bluetooth, it has potentially longer range than Bluetooth, and it has exceptionally low latency-subfolley seconds compared to Bluetooth’s milliseconds.
That’s not all. UWB uses less power and it can supply much better data transfer rates.
So all considered things, that’s the kind of tech you might want to put in a set of earplugs. And Samsung clearly intends to do just that.
What is Samsung doing with UWB earrings?
For the moment, it’s just a patent: As 91mobile’s reports, the patent is called wireless earphones and control method, computer equipment and storage medium. It was filed at the end of 2023, but only published this week.
According to the patent, the earplugs would connect to your device over Bluetooth before they let an UWB connection be taken over. The device then streams audio over the UWB directly to the earplugs in about the same way as Bluetooth does in most of today’s best wireless headphones.
The patent suggests data transfer rates of about 20 Mbps, in addition to being very low latency. While Bluetooth is theoretically capable of this, it does not happen in practice for audio – the maximum known data rate for Bluetooth sound right now is LDAC’s 990kbps. If Samsung’s UWB can actually use this large bandwidth, it is more than enough for really Audio in high resolution-real loss-free sound.
The downside is that although Bluetooth is in total, UWB is not; For example, even the basic model Samsung Galaxy S25 does not have it. This means that if Samsung really moves on with UWB buds in the sequel to the Samsung Galaxy Bud 3 Pro, it will only benefit owners of more expensive smartphones until UWB becomes more far -reaching.
