Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal stunned Manchester City 4-3 for extra time in Orlando Monday to draw one of the shocks of the club World Cup and set up a quarterfinals against Brazil’s fluminense.
Marcos Leonardo scored his second at night in the 112nd minute when Simone Inzaghi’s side looked out of the Premier League club, which had taken a ninth minute lead through Bernardo Silva.
Quick-Fire goal from Leonardo and Malcom in six minutes immediately after reboot, Al Hilal put in front before Erling Haaland equalized for the city in the 55th minute.
Four minutes in extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly went back in Ruben Neves’ corner to put the Riyadh-based club back in front, and while Phil’s foot is smooth out for City Leonardo with seven minutes left to take al Hilal.
“We knew it was a difficult game against one of the best teams in the world,” Koulibaly said. “We wanted to show our ideas, our talent, our power and I think we made a very good game.
“Defensively, we were very strong and offensively all the opportunities we could put inside we put in so we can be happy.”
Portuguese playmaker Silva had led the city in front as he pushed the ball across the line after Renan Lodi’s attempted approval ended at his feet inside the six-yard box.
Replays showed that the ball had brushed the wrist of the city’s Rayan Ait-Nouri earlier in the move, but the referee waved away from the Al Hilal protests.
Al Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then made a number of savings to refuse city a second before the interval and within seconds of the restart of the Saudi club smoothed.
Malcom drove down to the right and found Joao Cullero, whose ball into the six-yard box was originally blocked by a scattered Ederson, but Leonardo led the looping bound into the unguish net.
Six minutes later, Malcom was released behind the defense at Cancelo’s care from deep inside his own half, and the Brazilian showed tranquility to stroke his shot past Ederson.
However, the lead should only last three minutes when Haaland jumped on Silva’s corner, and Norwegian was denied a late winner of a desperate approval on the line from Ali Lajami.
The Saudis went on four minutes into extra time when Koulibaly rose to see a headline home from a corner, but the city is leveled again, replacing Rayan Cherki and the foot that combined for the English international to control a sublime for the first time volley over Bounou and into the lower corner.
Al Hilal would not be denied, and Leonardo claimed his second at night after watching Ederson rescue Sergeej Milinkovic-Savics header, the tired Brazilian stumbling as he steered the winner home.
