The Supreme Court in Pakistan has ordered the courts to conclude cases in connection with the events on May 9 within four months.
A bench with three members called on Tuesday and led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi issued the order while hearing bail interruption in connection with the events on May 9.
The directive aims to accelerate procedures in the midst of concerns about delays in politically sensitive trials, Express News reported.
During the hearing, a defense lawyer expressed concern about the possibility of conducting trials for such a short period of time, saying his client was facing 35 separate cases.
Chief Justice Yahya Khan responded by quoting the Mashal Khan Lynching case and noting that as the then Chief Justice for Peshawar High Court, the trial was completed within three months. He claimed that courts against terrorism were capable of timely judgment.
The Supreme Court had also issued similar instructions a day earlier in separate bail-related appeals filed by the Punjab government and called on lower courts to end the verdict within three months.
The Court’s latest Directive emphasizes the judiciary’s push for timely justice and effective handling of high -profile cases.
In February, it was announced that a five-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court will take the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf Foundation Chairman Imran Khan and others to a legal investigation into the violent incidents on May 9, 2023 and investigation of the alleged rigging in the past year.
The bench, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, holds the consultation of both petitions. IMRAN’s petition on May 9 -study was submitted last December.
Imran and Sher Afzal Marwat had filed the petition for investigating the charges of voting rig in February last year.
