Senate panel calls for resuscitation of science

Islamabad:

The Senate’s Standing Committee on Science and Technology at a meeting held on Thursday emphasized the importance of strengthening Pakistan’s scientific institutions and addressing the public health associated with certain consumer products.

One of the most important discussion points was the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST), which was established in 1984, which has only met three times since its formation, with the last meeting held in 2001. It was emphasized that although the PCST acts as the Secretariat for NCST, challenges have delayed agreements and resource restrictions limited progress.

Concerns were raised about the health risks, such as some “tea-itching” products that were marketed as milk alternatives. Officials recognized these concerns and agree on the need for stricter enforcement of quality standards together with consciousness campaigns and legislative actions where needed.
