Islamabad:
On Monday, the senators struggled strongly a brutal incident with honor killings in Balochistan, where a man and a woman were reportedly shot dead.
While discussing a proposal that was moved by Senator Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur to highlight the need for government-level intervention from the government to eliminate gender discrimination and promote women’s participation in economic activities nationwide, condemned legislators practices as “barbaric and inhuman,” confirming that no civilized society can tolerate such atrocities. They demanded quick and decisive action against the perpetrators and emphasized the need for justice.
Senator Irfan-Ul-Haque Siddiqui urged the house not only to condemn the barbaric incident, but also to recommend concrete measures to prevent such tragedy from repeating. He expressed concern about the apparent passivity of the provincial government, noting that despite the incident that happened two months earlier, it only emerged after the circulation of a video on social media.
He urged colleagues, especially those from Balochistan to unite in the efforts to settle the self -imposed system where individuals assume judge, jury and executioner without any legal authority to do so.
He said the brutal incident has brought shame for the whole nation. However, he emphasized that just condemnation is not enough unless the root causes behind the illegal killing of the couple being treated.
Senator Ali Zafar proposed the formation of a monitoring committee to ensure that the guilty involved in the honorary killing is brought to the court within two weeks.
Among these expressions of concern were Senators Sherry Rehman, Khalida Ateeb, Aimal Wali Khan, Irfan-Ul-Haque Siddiqui, Ali Zafar and Samina Mumtaz Zehri.
