Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heat wave alarm for Punjab from May 15 to May 19, as the province is rushing to an intense spell with warm weather.
According to PDMA, temperatures are expected to rise significantly, potentially exceeding normal levels by 4 to 7 degrees Celsius, which constitutes serious health risks to the public.
Pakistan Meteorological Department reports that continental winds currently dominate most parts of the country, resulting in hot and dry weather conditions.
On Wednesday, high temperatures are expected to continue over the plains where southern Punjab experiences the most serious heat. Larger cities such as Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur and Faisalabad are expected to detect temperatures between 41 ° C and 42 ° C.
PDMA has warned that these prevailing conditions can intensify the heat wave, especially affecting urban and lowland regions.
The alarm further indicates that the extreme heat is likely to continue over large parts of Punjab until May 20.
However, a Western weather system is expected to enter the province on the evening of May 19, which potentially brings temporary relief in the form of lower temperatures and insulated rainfall.
PDMA -Human Director Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed all Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and District Administrations to remain in high alarm and secure emergency preparedness for emergencies.
Relevant departments – including school education, health, transport, local authorities and rescue 1122 – have also been asked to implement immediate precautions to protect the public.
Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, wear lights and loose appropriate clothing, cover their heads when outdoors, and remain well hydrated. The authorities have also been instructed to ensure the availability of clean drinking water in public places and to equip hospitals and mobile health units to provide timely first aid to hot -related emergencies.
