Karachi:
Sindh High Court (SHC) has suspended the University of Karachi’s (KU) decision to cancel the degree of Islamabad High Court (IHC) Judge Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.
A division bench led by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro issued this order on Friday while hearing Justice Jahangiri’s petition against the university’s last week order.
On August 31, 2024, the University of Karachi’s Syndicate canceled the allegedly “invalid” degree of justice Jahangiri on recommendations from the university’s unreasonable means (UFM) Committee.
SHC On September 5, 2024, the university’s decision suspended.
However, on September 25, 2025, the university’s registrar issued a “statement” stating that Tariq Mahmood son of Qazi Muhammad Akram had been found guilty of using unreasonable means in the late 80s.
“[He] was dismissed for three years to take admission to any university/college and to appear in any university degree study during disqualification Circular No 88 of 1989 and was never a student at Islamia Law College Karachi.
“In accordance with the Syndicate Meeting, which was held on August 31, 2024 Video Solution No. 06, the LLB results and the degree of Tariq Mehmood supported seat # 22857; registration No AIL-7124/87 is hereby withdrawn and canceled.
At Friday’s hearing, Sindh -Attorney Jawad Dero, Ku Registrar Prof Dr. Imran Siddiqui, and other officials up the bench. The registrar said the university had received the right to two days ago. He requested time to submit an answer.
Attorney for Justice Jahangiri, lawyer Salahuddin, claimed that respondents may have been given time to submit their answers, but the cancellation order meanwhile should be suspended.
Justice Kalhoro noted whether KU’s cancellation order is later overturned, which will compensate for the damage caused by the judge. “This involves a man’s lifelong reputation. Was the party affected ever issued a message before the cancellation of his degree?” He asked.
The registrar replied that he was recently sent and did not realize. Justice Kalhoro noted that if the official appeared in court, he must give an answer.
“It may be that action was taken of personal interest. His degree is being questioned after 30-35 years. If such an application is entertained after decades, the affected person must receive a hearing.
“We do not say that no action law allows it-but how can we put a person’s honor at risk? Even ex-parte judgments are not considered good judgments,” he added.
The court later suspended the university’s decision to cancel the degree of Jahangiri and excluded further actions on the Syndicate’s recommendations and the unreasonable middle committee. The bench resumes the hearing on October 24th.
On September 30, the Supreme Court set aside an Islamabad High Court (IHC) Interim Order that had withheld Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri from performing court work. An IHC division Bench led by Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar on September 16, Justice prevented Jahangiri from performing his duties when it began to matter by a quo eligibility accusing him of holding a tablecloth.
